What would you do if you saw someone you knew on match.com? An ex? Someone you went to school with?

One night Amy and I were browsing match for just these types and find them. Amy finds an ex and I find this guy I went to school with.
During my first stint at GCCC there was a guy in my radio classes, JP we’ll call him, ’cause that’s his name. JP liked attention I guess, he talked with a fake Australian accent, we all knew it was face, yet he still went on insisting it was real. Occasionally, when he would slip up and not accentuate words enough, or at all, and someone would call him on it, he would just say he’d been in the states so long that the accent comes and goes. Then we would talk about him behind his back, good times. Don’t get me wrong though, other than this weird reach for attention, he could be a really nice guy when you spoke with him one-on-one.

Maybe a couple weeks later after finding him on match.com, Amy and I are on a quest for pizza and stop at Gumby’s, which seemed to be the only pizza place open after 10 on a Friday night, weird. We go in and I immediately recognized the guy behind the counter and he clearly recognizes me because he begins to speak in a well out-of-practice fake Australian accent. Gumby’s just has a tiny lobby—it’s not a dine-in restaurant, so we’re cornered. I don’t let on that I know him and don’t have an opportunity to say to Amy, “this is that guy.” So he slips up on a word and Amy calls him out, he shrugs it off. I’m having such a hard time trying not to laugh. When I get the chance, I text Amy and it’s good I did because she thought he looked familiar and almost asked him how she knew him.

So we leave and we’re both cracking up as we walk back to the car. Of course, we’re talking about him and there he is standing behind the building talking to a coworker. I don’t think he heard us and the laughter resumed with added hilarity once we were safely in the car.

Now those look like crepes to me and not what I would call pancakes, but great video anyway.

Okay, so this one is not real food, but it’s still really entertaining and I love the different things they came up with and how they used them. This video is made by PES, you can find more stop-motion videos from them on their website: EatPES.com; “Human Skateboard” is a good one to check out.

You may have already heard about McDonald’s move to be Starbucks prime competition, but I’m going to talk about it anyway. McDonald’s plans to open coffee bars, “McCafe”s in their US restaurants this year, but will it be successful?

As one commenter on Serious Eats mentions, they’ve had McCafes in Australia for a number of years. When I was in Australia in 2006 I happened to visit a McDonald’s that had one. While it seemed strange to start with, I can definitely see how this could work, in Australia that is.

There, unlike in the US, they have a high concern as to what you put into your body. For example, all of those trans fat laws coming into effect in the states have been in place for years in Australia, their Big Macs are made with meat! Real meat! At first I didn’t like the fries there at all because they we not greasy—soggy, greasy fries being something I was accustomed to at home. But after eating fast food in Australia (and New Zealand) I didn’t feel gross or guilty for putting something (“something” because we don’t know what it is most of the time) unhealthy into my body, because I hadn’t.

Personally, I would consider fast food in Australia real food and nothing like the “mystery meat” we have here and that’s why I think McCafes can work there. Not to say that they won’t work here, I’m not going to make that prediction just yet, but I for one, will not be trying it. I would have to be pretty desperate to buy a specialty coffee drink from a place already considered hazardous to my health, and of which I question the ethics regularly (on an executive and mere associate level).

As a side-note, I don’t care for Starbucks at all, but for other reasons.

What’s your opinion on McDonald’s having baristas? Do you think it will be a success? Will you try it yourself?

I hope everyone had a great Christmas, and at least took some time to remember why we really celebrate it.
Sure, you constantly hear people say “Jesus is the reason for the season,” and see plenty of church signs with the same statement, but is that really at the forefront of our minds this time of year. I admit I haven’t spent as much time focused on Christ or in the celebration of His birth as I should. It’s so easy to get caught up in earthly celebrations of gifts, food, and even that of family. Not that there’s anything wrong with celebrating family (or food, or how blessed we are to be able to give and receive gifts), but let us not forget what it’s all about. Celebrate and have joy in our Savior!

Tomorrow I will be leaving for Ocala to go to Holiday Youth Convention. I made a sort-of last minute decision to go; I’m getting to old for it and I figured if I didn’t go this year, I would definitely feel too old to go next year—not that there won’t be other older than I there, there definitely will be.
I’m bringing my laptop along in hopes that there will be free wireless in the hotel, but with the expectation that I won’t have much time to use it anyway.

After tomorrow I will be free until January 7. Here’s some of the things I’m going to be doing:

·A lot of reading
·Relaxing
·Watching movies
·Moving my site to Wordpress (real Wordpress with real hosting, w00t!)
·Making my Christmas list
·Shopping (hopefully)
·Eating!

Oh yeah, if you have this site bookmarked with any url other than http://ohbuoyancy.net change your bookmark to that now as any other address will quit working when I switch to Wordpress over the next couple days. Also if you subscribe to the rss feed it will no longer work, so check http://ohbuoyancy.net to see what the new feed is.
