A Failure to Communicate

news, politics 27 January 2008 | 0 Comments

I posted this as a comment, but I felt the need to make it a post of its own as well.

Wow, all of a sudden 4 new comments on a post that’s 3 weeks old, and all from Ron Paul supporters. (I only approved 2 as the other 2 were just links telling me to “look at this,” if you aren’t a bait and switch don’t dress up like one).

First, don’t assume I’m not educating myself (reference: “No one can understand how his plan works by listening to a small sound bite.” What are you talking about?). Just because I’m leaning a different way than you doesn’t necessarily mean that I haven’t done the research or that I’m leaning the wrong way and I’m not going to tell you that you are either. From these last two posts I gather that both of you are making your decision based on your personal ideals which may be very different from mine.

Please, if you want to share your opinion on why you’re voting for a certain candidate, do so. Tell me why, tell me what your requirements are and how you believe he will fulfill them. Don’t tell me to research it, I already am.

Honestly, I have 2 days until I vote in the primary and I’m still uncertain who I’m going to vote for. FairTax is the main fault I find with Huckabee, because I don’t think it’s fair in the least. Doesn’t Paul support it as well?

To give a little more insight into how I choose who to vote for, I’ll say this: I don’t. I don’t choose who to vote for so much as I choose who not to vote for; I pick the lesser of the evils. Romney still has a chance to get my vote, if it weren’t for his stance on abortion (“against abortion except“), he would have it.

I welcome all opinions on this post, but please give specific support that is to the point.

Ah, I see now. I’ve been linked to by a Ron Paul advocate blog.

Giuliani, Live

college, fotos, news, politics, video 16 January 2008 | 3 Comments

Candidate for the Republican Presidential nomination, Rudy Giuliani spoke on my college’s campus today. Notice how I had to preface that with “Candidate for the Republican Presidential nomination,” that’s because I talked to someone today who didn’t know who he was; of all the Republican candidates Giuliani is probably the most widely recognized name, yet people still don’t know who he is. Pay attention!

I took advantage of my college newspaper (“Gull’s Cry”) press pass and skipped the very long line waiting to get in the conference room.

I actually recorded (video) the first 8 minutes of his speech (I need a higher capacity memory card) and I’m waiting for it to upload right now. Uploading to vimeo takes way too long, they need to work on that. Okay the video will be here later, so keep an eye on this post if you’re interested.

More pictures on my Flickr page.

I wore my Huckabee sticker, but no one aside from those I was with saw it because I kept my jacket on. Disappointing I know.

Mike Huckabee?

family, fotos, politics 12 January 2008 | 13 Comments

That is the question.

This describes my feelings right now:

A bit torn on Ron Paul. After doing a little more self-educating on the candidates I’m now on the line between Paul and Huckabee. If you’d like to try to sway me in either direction, feel free to voice your opinions in the comments.

I went to the local Republican forum today. I had never been to one before but it was pretty much how I expected it to be. Romney’s table had cookies and brownies. McCain didn’t have a table at all, just 3 or 4 people standing behind signs. Paul had a bunch of hippies and face painting. Huckabee’s table was perhaps, no, make that exactly, how a campaign would be presented in a Hollywood movie, complete with small children running around with his bumper stickers on their clothes. Giuliani and Thompson both had a very subtle presence.

The hippies scared me away from Paul’s table and in the end I left with about 10 Huckabee bumper stickers and we currently have a Huckabee sign in our yard.

Captain America

I used a Captain America stamp on my voter’s registration, I wonder if anyone will notice. I thought it was cute anyway.

Vote!

computing, internets, politics, tech 7 December 2007 | 2 Comments

I’m actually registering to vote for the first time ever. Sure I could have 6 years ago, but I didn’t pay any attention to politics then; this is the first time that I’ve felt strongly enough about it to actually pay attention and vote.

I used Rock The Vote to fill out my registration form. I recommend it over the standard register to vote site. With Rock The Vote they give you the form right away while on the other site they want you to read what’s practically a dissertation on who is allowed to vote (which most people already know) before you get to the form. Plus Rock The Vote lets you fill out the form online (you still have to print, sign, and mail it of course). If you click the Rock The Vote banner in my sidebar the form will pop up and you can fill it out right away.

I’m supporting Ron Paul by the way. While I have my doubts that he will make it past the primary, I’m still giving him my 1up.

In other news, I hate Blogger! I don’t even know if this will publish. Wordpress.com is looking more appealing all the time. Every time I try to post a blog or update my layout I get “your blog is taking to long to publish…” and every time I have to retry repeatedly. What turns me off about Wordpress though is that I can’t have “real” Wordpress because my host is my ISP and they don’t support MySQL and I can’t afford to pay for hosting. With hosted Wordpress.com you can’t edit your css without paying to do so, I think that would really bug me. Actually with the updates Comcast is making I may want to migrate away from their hosting anyway.

I should be studying for finals.
